Mom 2

There was a time when my brothers graduated and went to study abroad. These were the days when iCQ was an innovation and dial-up internet just entered the country. Despite the quarrels we had, I really missed my brothers. So one night I asked my mother, why did my brothers had to go study so far away? Was it not difficult?

She answered that it was really difficult indeed. She answered that she misses them too and she said that it was difficult for them too. It was a sacrifice she, my father, and my brothers had done in hopes of a better future. She said there are some things that might be better for them by doing this even though it is hard. It is after that day that I keep reminding my self that working and studying is hard, no matter where it is. And sometimes, people have their own way to go through that makes it difficult for themselves and people around them. But this does not mean that they should not do it.

Fast forward several years, I was in junior high school and had shown no interest to join the Student Council body in that school. Somehow, at that age, I felt afraid that I was missing out, especially because apparently my brothers were quite active in that school before me. So in the afternoon of the registration day, I called my mother and ask her whether it is okay if I do not join the student council body. Because I saw it too bothersome and I am not sure I can handle the time well.

She answered that of course it was okay, and later on that day she told me something that resonated strongly with my adolescent confusion at that time. She said that, different people have different targets in life, and sadly usually we can not have it all in this life. We have to sacrifice something, to get something else that is specific for that particular person. I am glad she told me that because I learnt so early on that life going forward was going to be filled with choices.

Sure what she said was not a solution, but I felt it was really helpful for me to know of that fact really early in my life. She aptly used my own decision at that time and made me learn a bigger lesson. And sure it had a large impact on me because on every opportunity or difficult situation that come, those 2 moments always rings in my head ever so vividly.
